Build in the southeast edge of the undead mounds. There's great access to stone, iron, wood, and high tier thralls, and the all important obelisk is very close. There's water for fishing, and bark and plant matter in decent quality for small scale work. No brimstone at all, but that's where being right next door to the obelisk comes in.

Easily my favorite spot outside the northern highlands. Near the Hand of the Maker is really good for single player. If you're concerned about resource spread, most of the North has high amounts of iron and coal. Directly east of the mounds of the dead has a great deal of resources and the Wights for gossamer.

As you're a new player, your main base should be in an area that will experience level 1 or 2 purges, for now. That means the south desert and the river east to the jungle. You can always build a bigger one later, after you have some experience and materials stored up. I think priority one should be to be near an obelisk.
