It's not supposed to be used off-road. The system that the newer Xterras have that is useful off-road is ABLS, which stands for Active Brake Limited Slip.

When engine speed signal isn’t sent over CAN, the ABS control module will set a DTC and the VDC light will illuminate. I don’t believe the ABS light will. The most common (by far) cause of a missing engine speed signal is a failed camshaft position sensor. You can get odd combinations of warning lights with this failure.
