I like the tang safety and I like wood furniture enough to pay for the 500 if I ever buy one again, but the 88 isn't 'cheap as hell' and it takes the same accessories as the 500. 887 suffers from extraction issues related to the bolt. If I am right, the 887 cna handle 3.5" shells, where the 870 express can only handle 3" shells. 3.5" shells do have some merit in duck hunting any maybe to some extent turkey hunting.
