Depending on what part of SW CO you are from, you will find Unit 7 to be more wide open and less timber. There are a lot of big grass sections in unit 7. Lincoln county is a favorite of mine. Jewell, Mitchell, Eastern Osborne & Russell counties have some very large WIHA that can run continuously for a couple of miles.

I'm not familure with the WIHA leased land stuff in Kansas but in Nebraska most of the walk in stuff gets hammered hard the first couple week of the season then a lot of it goes un-hunted for weeks. I know I have always found birds on the public walk in lands late in December.The big news for hunters is the Walk-In Hunting Access (WIHA) program, part of Kansas's overall public hunting effort, one of America’s most successful, which is adding additional hunting throughout the state. The quail and pheasant cover is rated good to excellent in many of these areas.
