Both fun, both identical damage types. The stance damage is pretty similar and good for both. The beastclaw hammer has more range and slightly more stance damage per hit but it hits slower than the Marika hammer. The only definitive thing I can say is that the Marika hammer has great utility for dealing with enemies on platforms lower than you.
