By Bob Weaver. It was 80+ years ago in Grantsville in 1942 that the cornerstone of the county's new courthouse was laid, with the official opening some months later. The courthouse had been located in numerous buildings during a bitter struggle over the location of the county seat, with an official courthouse being built in Grantsville.The West Virginia DOH reports thousands of trees across Calhoun's nearly 600 miles of rural roads, although the main highways Rt. 16 and 5 have been cleared, except for additional trees falling across the right-of-way. Liberty Hill on US 33-119 has been closed several times, with trees trapping the volunteers who had been doing the clearing.Historians say the first school building was built in Calhoun in the general area about 1824. The river trail, still visible today, was traveled by early explorers and settlers before the region was open to commercial riverboat ventures in the late 1800s.
