As was said, you shouldn't combine handy and repairman. The problem you'll face with spears is that the spear skill takes a while to level. Maintenance will level by itself as long as you start with at least 1 point. Killing in one hit all the time is what you need, but that only happens at 7/8 spears which takes time.

The crafted stone knives also make pretty decent craftable weapons and can help you skill up to put that hunting knife to good use.
